The Riverwood Rays were formed in 2002 with 34 swimmers.  By 2005 the team had over 100.  The Rays competed in the Southern Metro Swim League until 2009, winning the league championship five consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2009.

The Rays joined the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA) in 2010 with 120 swimmers and have won multiple division titles, most recently in 2018 and 2019 prior to having to cancel the 2020 season and swim an unofficial 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Rays competed at Mingo Creek until relocating to the current home at Riverwood Athletic Club.
